Our History

Construction Promec was founded in 1987 at the corner of Saguenay and Murdoch streets in Rouyn-Noranda. From the windows of its small office and job trailer, the smokestacks of the Noranda Mine were visible, a site that would soon play a pivotal role in the company’s growth.

From the outset, growth was remarkable. Just three months after its founding, Promec already employed 136 people. One year later, the team had grown to 500 employees.

In 1989, the company secured a major contract: the construction of the Noranda Mine acid plant. Commissioned on December 20, 1989, the facility marked a significant milestone in the modernization of the mining operation.

As demand continued to rise, Construction Promec quickly outgrew its modest trailer office and invested in a permanent office and warehouse to support its expanding operations.

The decade began with a strong focus on diversification. Promec expanded its expertise into the industrial, hydroelectric and forestry sectors.

Despite the challenges of economic recession and market fluctuations, the latter half of the 1990s was marked by significant growth. The company broadened its operations into several regions, including Outaouais, Côte-Nord, Estrie and Southern Ontario.

Following a period of global economic instability, the 2000s began on solid footing. New opportunities emerged, and growth accelerated. To support its expansion, Promec relocated to Saguenay Boulevard in 2005, a facility better suited to its evolving operational needs.

During the latter half of the decade, the company strengthened its presence in the Canadian Prairies and delivered several large-scale projects.

This decade marked a major transformation as Promec evolved into a structured, multidisciplinary group.

• 2011 : Opening of a satellite office in Montréal and launching of a partnership in Northern Québec with Promec Nunavik.
• 2015 : Construction Promec officially became Groupe Promec. This milestone included the creation of a new entity in Nunavik, in partnership with Inuit representatives: Arngak Mining.
• 2016 : Expansion continued with the addition of Nuqsana Promec Mining in Nunavut.
• 2017 : Groupe Promec acquired Construction Socomec in Sorel.

In 2019, the Group secured major contracts in the Montréal region, including projects at the Olympic Stadium and Montréal–Trudeau International Airport.

As the company continued to expand and secure new projects, the Rouyn-Noranda head office facilities became insufficient to support its operations. In 2021, Promec relocated to Industrial Boulevard, doubling its office space and acquiring land ten times larger than its previous site.

In 2022, the company opened a new business location in Contrecœur, further strengthening its presence in the Greater Montréal area.

In 2024, Groupe Promec invested in the regional company Les Aciers JP, expanding the scope of its services and reinforcing its regional footprint.
